Old Slave Mart MuseumThe Old Slave Mart Museum in Charleston, South Carolina was originally known as Ryan's Mart in 1852 as a marketplace for slave trade. The site changed ownership and functions, until its establishment in 1938, as one of the first African American museums in the country. In 2005, the museum commissioned MurphyCatton, and partner design firm, Rowland Design, for a complete renovation of its exhibitry. In February 2006, the Old Slave Mart Museum re-opened its doors to share its developments. The Old Slave Mart Museum is a two-floor, 1,800 square foot facility, with large graphic paneled walls informing and guiding visitors through the museum. What posed as a design challenge was innovating a new way to mount the graphics because the outside walls were owned by neighboring buildings. The design and fabrication team developed a method of presenting some graphics without touching the walls. |
